Biocidal products shall be authorised prior to placing on the market
Biocides are chemical substances that are designed to destroy or prevent the action of microorganisms, pests and other harmful organisms. A biocidal product contains or may generate one or more active substances which are designed to eliminate the effect of harmful organisms. Biocidal products shall be authorised prior to placing on the market as biocides may also be harmful for humans, animals and the environment.
Disinfectants authorised by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration authorises two types of disinfection products:
- Disinfectants used on surfaces in contact with food in food establishments, dairy herds or fishing vessels storing food for more than 24 hours
- Products for teat disinfection prior to and after milking
Other types of biocidal products are authorised by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency.
When the EU Biocidal Products Regulation is fully implemented in 2025 the authorisation of disinfectants used in the food industry and teat disinfectants will be handled by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. More information on this topic can be found on the page The Biocidal Products Regulation and transitional measures.
The national authorisation scheme
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration authorises the disinfectants listed above based on and assessment of the efficacy of the products at the relevant concentration of use and an assessment of the risk of transmission of hazardous residues to food when the products are used correctly. Only products that do not pose a health risk when used correctly can be authorised.
Companies applying for authorisation of disinfectants used on surfaces in contact with food or teat disinfectants shall forward documentation for the product efficacy in accordance with relevant European standards. The products can fulfill the requirements for technological efficacy by having a bactericidal, a fungicidal or both a bactericidal and fungicidal effect. The products must not be placed on the market before authorisation is granted.
Products containing fragrances will generally not be authorised by The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration unless a technological function in the product is demonstrated. Colorants shall be approved for use in foodstuffs.
