Geographical indications

Geographical Indications are protected intellectual property rights.

The EU system for geographical indications for wine, spirit drinks and agricultural products helps protect and promote the names of specific products which possess specific qualities, characteristics or reputation which are linked to their geographical origin and method of production.

There are three types of geographical indications:

  • Protected Designation of Origin (PDO): For agricultural products and wine, which are fully produced, processed, and prepared in a specific region using local ingredients and expertise.
  • Protected Geographical Indication (PGI): For agricultural products and wine, whose reputation or quality is linked to a region, even if ingredients come from elsewhere.
  • Geographical Indication for spirits: Similar to PGI, but applies to spirit drinks.

Danish geographical indications

Producers can apply for registration of a geographical indication by submitting a product specification that documents the product’s specific characteristics and its link to the geographical area.

Denmark currently has thirteen registered geographical indications, covering cheeses, meats, vegetables, and wines.

Food business operators involved in marketing products with a registered geographical indication shall comply with the requirements in the product specification relevant for the activities of the food business operator.  Activities covered by a product specification must be controlled by the Danish Food and Veterinary Administration prior to the marketing of products with a geographical indication.

All the Danish registered names and product specifications are available on the Danish site regarding product specifications for geographical indications.

See the Danish registered geographical indications and the respective product specifications here. (which are only available in Danish)
